The Art Deco period ran from 1925 to 1945 and covered architecture, painting, sculpting and of course jewelry. What makes Art Deco jewelry so attractive is its symmetrical, geometric and streamlined designs.
Most Art Deco both fine and costume are based around silver metals and not gold. Platinum/Diamonds were used for fine jewelry, while costume jewelry designers used Rhodium plating over base metals to imitate Platinum and white crystal rhinestones to replace diamonds.
You can pick up great pieces for under a hundred dollars. Many pieces will be signature from leading designers from the period. What to look for before buying -- missing stones, broken clasps... while the pieces are over 70 years old don't expect them to be in perfect condition. Don't let a missing stone stop you from buying a piece you like. Replacement stones can be purchased and glued into the piece.
Most Hollywood stars of the period wore a lot of costume jewelry as apposed to their fine pieces to prevent theft. You could buy a costume necklace that looked like your fine piece for under a $100 where the Platinum/Diamond piece could be valued at $10,000.
